It is now an unmissable event of the autumn season which lasts until October. The Bordeaux marketplace, usually devoted to the sale of great Bordeaux wines, puts its expertise at the service of wines from all over the world by selling some great international wines.
Last year, the tasting of these wines was epic and non-exhaustive, with no structure offering to taste the wines. This year, the Maison Joanne in Bordeaux, with the creation of its new company Joanne Rare Wines, entirely dedicated to the marketing of wines outside Bordeaux and directed with talent by Jean-Quentin Prats, the son of Jean-Guillaume Prats (president of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild), organised a tasting of these wines in the heart of the city and in its perfectly air-conditioned cellars. Similarly, the wine merchant Duclot organised a tasting in Paris of the wines sold on the French market via its website www.chateaunet.com. All the conditions were thus met to have an almost exhaustive vision of the marketing. This year, three new properties were added to an already important range. For the first time, a Spanish wine will be marketed. It is Yjar 2017, a wine made in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño in Rioja Alvesa by renowned winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. The vineyard, on the high ground, is planted with massal selections of tempranillo, graciano, garnacha, granegro and rojal. The wine is simply superb. Another estate to join the Bordeaux space is Beaux Frères, the former Oregon estate of the famous American critic Robert Parker and his brother-in-law, bought in 2007 by the Henriot group, which presents itself in a very successful 2018 vintage. Finally, Penfolds, the Australian behemoth, has also decided to market its emblematic Penfolds 2018 Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, a vintage made since 1973, stopped for a while and then relaunched in 2008, which turns out to be Penfolds concentrate, and therefore very qualitative. While the 2018 vintage is the favoured theme of most releases, many 2019s or a few 2017s are on offer. I must admit to a certain optimism about the quality of the wines. The level is very high and if the prices are also relatively high, it is clear that the Bordeaux market is selling very great wines. Perhaps this is the beginning of a Copernican revolution where Bordeaux will dethrone London as the epicentre of the marketing of great international wines? To be continued. Enjoy your reading and tasting!
